Traditionally Nairs have been landlords, administrators and warriors. Nairs are included as forward caste because they played a dominant role in the state of Kerala.
There are several versions about the origin of Nairs. Most authentic among them is the one established by Chattambi Swamikal, the legendary spiritual leader of Nairs. According to him Nairs were Naga lords who ruled as feudal lords in the Chera kingdom. Nairs were the descendants of the rulers and formed part of the nobility of Kerala. Chattambi Swamikal also established that Nairs were kashathriyas who came to Kerala along with Brahmins.
Nairs played a dominant role in all walks of life till early 20th century.
